I'm not a slave to "this season's" fashion trends, or really any style rules for that matter. I believe style is a very personal thing and if you like it, you should rock it.
With that being said, there a few tips I've heard over the years that I find myself using pretty much daily. While they're simple and straightforward, they make a big impact on the cohesion and "togetherness" of an outfit.
TIP 1: THE FRENCH TUCK
I'm going to go ahead and assume everyone's seen #queereye (if you haven't - stop reading. go watch. I'll wait!). While I love them all, because each of the #QE guys is just SO good at what they do, I have a soft spot for Tan.
Tan (the QE fashion expert & designer) is not only super classy AND "everyday-bold" with his style choices, which I love, but he also gave us one of the greatest fashion tips of all time. It came in the form of a #qetip aired after the credits, all about the "French Tuck." If you're not familiar, allow me to introduce you to the #frenchtuck phenomenon.
Executing a French Tuck is simple: just tuck in a bit of fabric in the front, slightly off-center, and blouse it out. It'll provide some added shape and interest, rather than leaving a shirt or sweater untucked all around.
TIP 2: ADD TEXTURE
In the summertime, I'm a sucker for a silky tank, jeans, stilettos, and some dainty jewelry. But adding texture in the colder months is a who different feel (get it?!).
Whether a sheepskin vest, chunky cable knit, or a soft, fluffy scarf, fall and winter are the easiest times of the year to add texture to an outfit! I usually focus on one textured piece to center the outfit around, and let the other items play a more supporting role.
Boots and shoes can also be a great way to contribute texture! For example, try pairing a shearling coat with a flannel, jeans, and tall Hunter rubber boots. I also like pairing a slim and subtle suede textured over-the-knee boot with a super warm and cozy sweater.
TIP 3: BALANCE
Just like choosing either a bright lip or heavy eye makeup, striking the right balance of an outfit is important. I think of this most often with silhouettes.
Here, because my sweater is chunky and not as figure-flattering, a skinny jean creates a balance and brings some shape to the outfit. If this sweater were paired with a boot leg, there would be too much loose fabric, in my opinion.
Adding sleeker elements other places (e.g., a ponytail, hoop earrings, thin-framed glasses) offsets the chunkiness of the sweater and brings balance to the outfit.
There you have it, babes! My three style tips that I swear by.
Of course, you can use or ignore these, but if you choose to modify - or if you have your own style tips that you swear by - let me know!! Drop a comment down below, and tag a friend who would love these tips!
